Having saved the members of the GRC from violent revolutionaries, Sam proceeds to give them a wannabe Aaron Sorkin lecture. Then comes the most insufferable part of this episode. To me, this just proves that this show didn't really know what to do with any of its characters. John, uh, passes that test, and gets rewarded with some Bucky banter even though they were trying to violently murder each other not long ago. I always say that the number-one most important thing about a superhero is that they actually save people rather than just beating up bad guys.

Combined with his other scenes in that episode (his defiant defense of homicide before a government oversight board and his friendly meeting with Julia Louis-Dreyfus' obviously evil Valentina Allegra de Fontaine) I was led to believe he would show up as a villain in this finale.but instead he's still kind of a hero? He calls out Karli Morgenthau, she kicks his butt, but then he abandons the fight in order to do an actual superhero thing of trying to save a truck full of GRC captives from falling to their doom. John Walker shows up, which is no surprise since last week's episode had a mid-credits scene showing him forging his own Captain America shield. As Sam, Bucky, and Walker advance on the Flag Smashers, a series of gas grenades drop from above. An onlooker shouts, “Hell yeah! That’s Black Falcon right there,” but his friend corrects him, “No, that’s Captain America.” Karli feels betrayed that Sam has bought into the Stars and Stripes façade. The hostages are saved as a crowd of spectators cheer. Walker and Bucky watch the truck teeter over the edge about to plummet until suddenly Captain America arrives and uses every single ounce of horsepower from his wingsuit and boosters to keep the truck from falling. From the bottom of the construction site pit, Bucky sees Walker trying to pull back the truck to stop it from falling however, he’s knocked into the pit by the Flag Smashers. The fall would mean certain death for the victims inside. She pins the accelerator and bails on it, sending the truck careening towards the edge of an unstable scaffolding. With one truck rescued, Karli sets her sights on the last truck. He rushes to the construction site to help Bucky with the hostages in the armored trucks. Karli smirks at his attempt as the Flag Smashers swarm and attack Walker.Įlsewhere, with the aid of Red Wing, and a person onboard the chopper with pilot experience, Sam is able to neutralize the Flag Smasher threat and ensure the hostages in the helicopter can land safely. John throws his shield at Karli but it lacks the same impact as Cap’s shield. Karli apologizes to John that she didn’t mean to kill his friend she doesn’t want to “hurt people that don’t matter,” which only angers John even more that she diminished Lemar Hoskins' life. As Bucky struggles to remove the spyder lock, John Walker enters the fray with his homemade shield. While Bucky catches up with the armored trucks, Karli distracts him by lighting up one of the trucks with the trapped hostages. Bucky takes off after the trucks on a motorcycle as Sharon neutralizes a Flag Smasher with mercury vapor. Realizing the hostages are being split up, Sharon and Bucky head down to the garage where several council members are loaded up in armored trucks and sealed inside. With that, she tells Bucky to “sit this one out” and thanks him for taking her call.
Bucky responds, “It’s all I ever tried to do, and I failed twice.” He cautions that her cause does not justify all this death and pleads with her to not go down this path.
She asks Bucky if he’s tired of fighting for the wrong side before telling him it doesn’t matter if she survives this she’s fighting for “something bigger than myself,” before asking if Bucky could ever say the same thing after all the bodies he’s collected.
Bucky spots a Flag Smasher, but before he can pursue them down a stairwell, a supporter approaches Bucky and hands him a phone-it’s Karli.
